Considering therapy

Why do people choose to have therapy?

People choose to come to therapy for many different reasons. For some, it is because they are struggling with a new situation. For others, it may be that they have had difficulties over a long period and feel that now is the right time to seek help.

If you are feeling low in your mood, often worrying about things, lack confidence and feel that anxiety is getting in the way of you doing things you need or want to do; if you are struggling with your sleep (or are sleeping too much), or if you are troubled by memories or nightmares of things from the past, then therapy can help you.

I have a lot of experience working with people who have experienced trauma in their life. This may be trauma that happened in their childhood, in the family or at school, through abuse, bullying or bereavement. Or it may be a more recent experience that is causing distress,  perhaps difficulties at work or in a relationship. I also work with people who have experienced traumatic events such as accidents or criminal acts, which may have left them feeling afraid and unable to get back to normal life.

There is growing evidence that past trauma has links to a range of physical conditions including chronic pain, fibromyalgia and functional neurological disorders. In studies, up to 50% of people with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder also report having chronic pain. EMDR therapy can be an effective approach for people experiencing these conditions.

Many people find coming to therapy for the first time can be a bit anxiety provoking, so I will do everything I can to put you at your ease, and I will be guided by you if there is something that you do not feel comfortable with.

How long does therapy take?

Whilst some types of talking therapies are designed to be offered over a long period of time, the therapies I offer are usually relatively brief. EMDR therapy in particular can work quickly and require fewer sessions than other approaches. The exact number of sessions varies from client to client depending on their needs and their wishes and this can be discussed in the free consultation.

Choosing a therapist

Choosing a therapist isn't always easy, and it is important to find a therapist you are comfortable with and have confidence in. I offer a free 15-minute online or telephone consultation. This is an opportunity for you to meet me, to discuss your hopes for therapy and to give me a brief overview of your current difficulties. We can then discuss how I might be able to help you. Following this, you can decide if you would like to arrange a first appointment.
