My Approach
With over 30 years spent working in the NHS, in community and in-patient services, I have a wide experience of working with a range of different mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, grief and trauma. I have also helped people who have difficulties trusting others and forming positive relationships because of early relationship difficulties or abuse.

When someone is seeking help, my first aim is to give them time to talk and to listen carefully, so that together, we can gain a good understanding of the problem and begin to understand what is keeping the problem going. This will allow me to suggest the best therapy approach for them.

I have learned over many years of working, that 'one size' does not 'fit all' when it comes to therapy. People will vary in how quickly they feel comfortable in therapy and also in the type of therapy that suits them. I sometimes see people who have had a negative experience with a particular mode of therapy in the past, which has made them feel that they are perhaps not suited to therapy. Working together, we are usually able to find a way in which a psychological approach can help them.

I have training in a range of psychological and therapy approaches. These all have a good evidence base, which means that they have been found in research studies to be helpful. These therapies include EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Therapy), ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy) and CFT (Compassion Focused Therapy). Therapy may sometimes involve a 'blend' of elements from these different therapy models.

I provide therapy both 'in person' and online to people over the age of 20. I do not offer therapy to children and teenagers.
I have a particular interest in working with adults in mid-life and older, and have considerable experience of working with people struggling with life transitions, for example around retirement, managing health conditions and bereavement.

I do not offer couples therapy, however I am happy to see clients with a family member or friend, if they wish, for additional support.

I am happy to see clients either in my own home, at the Dalriada Hospital in Ballycastle, or sessions can be online with a video call.

In some circumstances, I can visit clients in their own home for sessions, where a client is housebound and unable to travel. My travel time will be charged pro-rata in this situation.
